  3. Liz I did asked the organizers if they were recording it, but I don’t think so.
It was a student event in one of the student residences. Speakers were; Michael Barnsley, a scientist who makes fractal pictures, Alistair Noble from the Music School, Jude Rae and myself. A couple of students did a humorous introductory piece after which each of us spoke for twelve minutes, then questions. It was fairly light-hearted, good cheese and wine to go with an interesting evening.

Alistair’s address was thoughtful and essentially opted for an interpretation of beauty as a result of cultural context and influences, and processes in the mind. Michael I think saw beauty as more external and was interested in what might stay consistent across responses to what people perceived as beauty. Jude talked more directly to the visual arts and contemporary practice. She might like to say more herself. And I can send you a copy of what I said if you like.

Anybody else like to enter the fray?

  4. how did the talk go Vivienne? it is a subject that can be approached from so many angles. many things etc are beautiful but none is beauty itself. it seems to be something else, something further?

  5. Exactly! Its a bit of a nightmare really. This was pretty light, not really able to go very deep in a format like this. It was enjoyable I hope with enough to make people take it further themselves. If you click on this it should take you to my contribution.
