Liz’s texts for reading group Fri 23 Oct 2009

Liz Coates has supplied four single page readings for Friday 23 October. I’ve sent them by email as I’ve had a bit of difficulty posting them on the blog. Here’s the reference and Liz’s comments.- Viv

Ref: John Berger, The Sight of a Man, in: Selected Essays & Articles – The Look of Things, Pelican, Penguin Books Ltd, UK, 1972.
The book in SofA library is a small paperback with yellowing pages and I had to do some adjusting in photoshop to make it readable.
A great writer talking about visual perception; leads well into more scientific and cognitive discussions.

I’d also like to refer to two additional texts for interested readers. Both these texts have a great deal of insights to share:

Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Cezanne’s Doubt, in: Sense and Non-Sense, (trans. Hubert L. Dreyfus & Patricia Allen Dreyfus), Northwestern University Press, 1964, p.9-25.

Lawrence Gowing, Cezanne: The Logic of Organized Sensations (1977) in: Conversations with Cezanne, (ed.) Michael Doran, Berkeley, University of California Press, 2001, p.180-212.
(I was tempted to submit this as the reading, but it is very long. Full of insights about painting in general, B&W images of Cezanne’s paintings scattered through the text.)

Best wishes, Liz

More on Merleau-Ponty – for your interest

This text is Lecture 6. Art and the World of Perception from a book of a series of seven lectures given on French radio in 1948. Although the text we’re reading for friday was written in 1961, I thought you would be interested to see how he presented his ideas at an earlier stage of development, in simpler form and in language for general audience. Apologies for the quality of the scan, but I think you should be able to read it.

By the way, Jude’s text, I think (say if I’m wrong Jude), is from; The Merleau-Ponty Aesthetics Reader Edited & with an Introduction by Galen A. Johnson, pub. Northwestern University Press. It is in the library so you can check notes for Eye and Mind see Plates of artists work discussed in it and also read the introductory chapter and a critical essay on Eye and Mind. If you’re not familiar with M-P, these and the attached text may be useful.

Interested to have your comments on any of this.

Change of plan – Both Reading Groups to now discuss Merleau-Ponty on 29 May 2009

For various reasons, not least being difficulties some had in downloading Practical Metaphysics,  both reading groups will now discuss Jude’s selection, Eye and Mind by Maurice Merleau-Ponty at our next discussion groups; 1pm Fri 29 May, A Block.

I think Jude sent a copy to everyone if you don’t have a copy, can’t download one from here, can’t get one from the office or another PG, let me know and I’ll print one off for you on Thursday. Its a good text for everyone to read and hopefully we’ll be able to come back to Practical Metaphysics and Tony Lane later in the year.

Sorry we haven’t streamlined the posting of readings yet, better next time hopefully.
